Improving your Cars Gas Mileage

We all want to get the most out of every tank of gas we buy. If this wasn’t the case why are there so many “tricks” that try and squeeze the most out of every drop of gas? For example, there is a theory that if one drives with the air conditioner off, the vehicle will use less gas and therefore be more efficient. Though this is true, it definitely isn’t worth sweating all the way to work. Another one is that driving behind a large semi-truck helps eliminate wind resistance which in turn improves gas mileage. This also is correct, but most 18 wheel trucks drive slow, throw rocks up from their tires which hit your car, and don’t want you back there anyway. There is even a myth that says putting moth balls in the gas tank increases the octane. Whether that one is true or not, the best advice is to not put things in your gas tank that are not intended to be there. In the end, the best way to get more miles per gallon is to study how a cars combustible engine works and find a way to improve it.

All combustible engines work the same way. Air is brought into the engine, the air is then mixed with gas, an explosion occurs, and then the exhaust is pushed out of the engine. So basically the idea is Air In, Air Out. The more efficient an engine does this simple action the better it will drive, the better gas mileage it will get, and the longer it will last. The concept is really quite simple.

Two of the best ways to improve this process is by installing a cold air intake and replacing your stock exhaust system with a new freer flowing one. A cold air intake opens the intake allowing the engine to get more quicker and more abundantly. The air filter associated with a cold air intake is also a free flowing air filter that is significantly more efficient than a stock air filter. With a new exhaust, the air is able to escape the engine quicker and easier. This is done with larger pipes and performance mufflers.

  1. Unknown Said,

How awesome! I never thought of doing something like this, though I have HATED the mess that always exists in Mufflers Great post!!!

  2. Thank you for these, I knew a different exhaust system does improve the mileage but I never had the idea on how this happens. I got a new exhaust recommended by a friend at jeep exhaust. The performance has improved and my jeep is now consuming less.
